Frequently Asked Questions

These irritating conditions indicate that the pool water is not chemically balanced or has not been properly treated. A common cause is high levels of chloramines, formed when chlorine combines with perspiration, body oils, urine and other contaminants brought into pools by swimmers. Contrary to what most people think, a strong chemical smell is not an indication of too much chlorine in the pool. In fact, the pool may actually need additional chlorine or to be “shocked” to get rid of chloramines and sanitize the water.

The water’s Ph is a measure of it’s total acid-alkalinity balance. Simply put, water that is either too acidic or too alkaline will cause undesirable chemical reactions. It is measured on a scale of 0-14. If the water of a pool has a PH value under 7.0 it is considered acidic. If pool water has a PH value of 8.0 it means the water is basic or alkaline. Acidic pool water with a PH of 7.0 or lower can cause burning and itching of the eyes and the skin. It also can cause corrosion of ladders, pumps, plaster and especially the heat exchanger in your heater. Base or alkaline pool water with a PH above 8.0 will make chlorine less effective. Minerals such as calcium come out of solution and this can lead to cloudy water and mineral deposits.
